The Sussex heating oil market

Sussex has a split character when it comes to heating oil. The coastal towns. Brighton, Worthing, Eastbourne, are predominantly gas-heated, but move inland to the High Weald, the South Downs, or the more remote parts of West Sussex and the picture changes sharply. Rural Sussex has a high concentration of older, oil-heated properties, particularly timber-framed and listed buildings that are poorly suited to heat pumps. Competition from national distributors is reasonable across the county, though the most rural areas of the Weald share some of Kent's supply dynamics.

The High Weald, particularly around Heathfield, Uckfield, Crowborough, and the villages of the Rother Valley, has the highest concentration of oil-heated properties in the county. The South Downs National Park also contains many off-grid properties. Restricted lane access is common in rural East Sussex, so mentioning tanker size requirements when ordering is particularly important here.

How much heating oil do homes in Sussex use?

A typical oil-heated home in Sussex uses between 1,500 and 2,500 litres per year depending on property size, insulation, and how warm the household keeps it. Larger detached and older properties use more; well-insulated modern homes less.

The most cost-effective approach is to order a full tank in summer (July or August historically offer the lowest prices) and avoid emergency winter top-ups when prices and demand peak simultaneously. See our guide to the best time to buy heating oil for the full seasonal breakdown.
